The meaningful topic of Silenced Voices has been relevant throughout history and remains so today. This program features composers whose works were banned for political and/or religious reasons. This music is an invitation to reflect on the countless voices in the arts and literature that have been silenced for centuries and on those whose work is presently being suppressed. We will feature compositions by Hans Krasa, Paul Hermann, Theo Smit Sibinga and Jacob Meyerbeer, possibly some unknown names and works for some of us. The provocative String Quartet no. 8 of Dimitri Shostakovich, dedicated to the victims of fascism and war, touchingly captures a sense of desperation, sadness and heartbreak with an underlying desire to overcome. Joining us on this journey will be violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson bringing his wealth of experience as a member of the Pacifica String Quartet for 17 years during which time they won a Grammy, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant among many other honors. Also appearing will be young superstar and local hero, violinist, Alexi Kenney, rock star violist, Richard O’Neill, the inimitable clarinetist, Romie deGuise Langlois and Michelle Djokic on cello.
